Notes 49 – Fetal Development Part 2

As the embryo develops, membranes form around it. One of those membranes will project out and begin to grow into the wall of the uterus. The placenta begins to form during the 10^th week. The placenta provides food and oxygen to the embryo/fetus while removing waste. Both the fetus and mother work to make it. Materials like oxygen, CO₂, alcohol, waste, some viruses (HIV), antibodies, and drugs can pass through the placenta however the mother and fetus DO NOT share the same blood.
